Fly Fishing Casting Techniques

October 14th, 2008 by Rosanne Lorraine

As was mentioned in the previous article, fly fishing can be done both in freshwater and saltwater. A lot of fly fishermen try their skills in different environments to experience what fly fishing is all about, but the casting techniques should vary for different situations. Some of the most popular casting techniques include the Overhead Cast, the Double Haul Cast, the Roll Cast, and the False Cast.

Roll Cast

This cast is most suitable when fishing in a small stream or any other tight quarter. When you are fishing on a stream with foliage and overhangs, there is no room to try the overhead cast. The roll cast should be used for this situation. It is best done with double taper line.

False Cast

It can be used when the fisherman is shifting course between casts. It also will establish the distance of the cast to the intended area. This cast is repeated three or four times to help shift the movement from left to right and vice versa.

Overhand Cast

The overhand cast is suitable in picking the fly line off the water and repositioning it to another area. This casting technique can be used as many times as you want. You can set it to the spot where you encounter the fish.

Double Haul Cast

This casting technique will help you get more distance. It’s the cast you should use to help you get across a deep pool and catch a fish.

As you can see, there are various casting techniques to suit various environments. There is no reason why you won’t get a large catch when you use the proper casting technique.
