Improve Your Swimming Technique

January 20th, 2009 by Rosanne Lorraine

swimmA lot of potentially good swimmers swim slowly. Usually, they cannot reach their potential because either they are using wrong techniques or something about their actions are wrong. This is a very serious hindrance to becoming a fast swimmer. For a beginner, it is important to learn one step at a time. First, concentrate on the arm movement. Kicking and efficiency are not important at this point. It is only after the arm movement is mastered that lessons should progress to efficiency. Kicking can be tough to learn, so most experts save it for later.

Below are two tips that can improve the arm movement:

Tip 1: Improve Elbow Movements

The elbow is the most critical joint to consider in swimming. It significantly can improve speed and efficiency. Elbow positioning is the area serious athletes look into when they are swimming. Try to picture a windmill, if you want to improve your movement.  But while it is quite easy for most to improve their elbow position, it is difficult for some. This is because they lack shoulder flexibility. In this case, exercising to be more flexible is recommended.

Tip 2: Pull Crosses or Pull Wide over the Centerline

Arm trajectory problem is an issue that some swimmers face. Most beginners pull wide when they pull outward from the rotation. This type of pull doesn’t generate enough power for the energy expended since the large muscles aren’t utilized to its potential. Correcting this issue means doing a “half pull” wherein the force is exerted over the centerline. The crossover typically occurs at the mid distance before the stroke is finished.
