When sitting in a small desk in a high school French class, the majority of students learn about geographical locations in the Francophone world that are significant in one way or another to the French people. Aside from the typical places, such as Paris, Nice, or even Quebec, one French location is more fabled, more beautiful, more rugged and extreme, more intriguing even than even the most prized museum in Paris.

Known to the French as “La Dame Blanche des Alpes,” or in English, “the white lady of the Alps,” Mont Blanc is a rocky, snowcapped peak near the French, Swiss, and Italian border that has catered to the French desire for an escape to the outdoors for centuries. Even today, the Mont Blanc region is one of the most superb locations on earth for outdoor activities, any time of the year.

Rising over 15,771 feet, Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps Mountain range of Western Europe. In the immediate area of the mountain, there are around 400 summits, 40 glaciers, seven pristine valleys, and it even straddles the border of three countries. Mont Blanc is a hub for outdoor activities for European, as well as international tourists during any time of the year, and caters to those looking for calm and relaxation, adventurous hikes, or even death-defying rafting and paragliding.

Perhaps the most popular activity for tourists looking for an adventure, although within reason, is the Tour du Mont Blanc hiking circuit. It is by far the most popular in Europe, and winds for 105 miles through the dangerous, rugged, and awe-inspiring terrain of the Mont Blanc Region. In the summer, the trail hosts some 10,000 tourists who begin and end their 10-day hike in France. Along the way, the trail passes through 11 mountain passes, a 32,000-foot range in elevation, and through two other countries, Italy and Switzerland. To get the quintessentially French experience, hikers spend most nights in isolated Alpine inns and huts that are characterized by family-style meals, loud singing and dancing, and hearty traditional Alpine meals.

Mark Twight, a notable American mountain climber described Mont Blanc and the neighboring city of Chamonix as, “the death sport capital of the world,” due to its perfect setting for extreme versions of popular outdoor sports such as ice climbing, rock climbing, skiing, paragliding, and white-water rafting. While performing any of these activities in the region, there are spectacular views of Mont Blanc, and the neighboring European regions. For those looking to flirt with death, many bases around the area take adventurers on extreme ski trips, terrifying mountain climbs, and even brisk paragliding adventures through the valleys and peaks of the area.

Mont Blanc (and the Chamonix area) is arguably the best place to go in Europe for outdoor sports of any kind, with an emphasis on the extreme. Whether it be to relax or to literally glide through the mountain peaks, Mont Blanc is indeed the place to be.
