Outdoors with the Kids

“You should be playing outside.”

How often is it heard that parents wish their children would leave the comfort of a tv or computer screen and venture outside?  Based on experience and Internet searches, it happens frequently.

If you and/or your family is new to hiking, you can start with minimal effort and money.  Research hiking trails that are located nearby.  Make sure to check for the length and level of difficulty for a trail.  Keep in mind the age and physical ability of each hiker.

Before leaving for your hike, make sure you have the following supplies:

  • Sneakers or hiking boots for each hiker
  • Water bottles (at least 1 per hiker)
  • Bugspray
  • Sunblock
  • First aid kit with adhesive bandages and antiseptic wipes
  • Backpack (to carry supplies)

Before heading out on our your hike, make sure you have planned accordingly.  You should check the weather, so that you don’t get caught in a rain-, snow-, or wind- storm during your hike.  Also, you should leave at a time that will not have you hiking after sundown.

With a little planning and minimal money, you can enjoy a wonderful afternoon or morning with your family.  In addition to getting everyone away from lighted screens, you will have the opportunity for great conversations and get some exercise.  Plus, you might help to further your child’s appreciation for nature.

What are you waiting for?  Go take a hike!
