According to Parasailing.com, “Parasailing is a popular sport in which the rider hitched to a parachute-like canopy, is set aloft in the air. Aquatic parasailing involves being pulled by a motorboat in the water.” But, it can be so much more. Have you ever wanted to feel like one of those seagulls or pelicans you see at the beach, floating high above the white sand and the clear, blue water? Parasailing is a magical experience and is on the “bucket lists” of many tourists to tropical beach destinations.
While in Ft. Myers Beach this past week, I decided to walk to the beach and do some investigation into parasailing. As I walked up to the rickety, wooden cart underneath a giant yellow umbrella, the first thing I noticed was the man in charge. Your typical Caribbean “beach bum,” he wore a loose Hawaiian shirt and khaki shorts. There was no doubt about it, I had arrived in the right place for parasailing. He went took the time to go over the pricing with me, and he even went so far as to offer me a 10% discount.
The rate for parasailing in Florida on that day (yes, rates change) was $75 per person, with a maximum allowance of three at one time. This is the going rate in most beach areas in coastal Florida, with rates varying greatly around the islands of the Caribbean. Most of these people will also try to have you throw in a session on the jet skis, but we later found out that those rentals were upwards of $100 per person, and the State of Florida requires a boating license for drivers ages 16-22. This even further encourages parasailing.
The experience is well worth the money, though. It is something that was very unique to me, as a Midwesterner. This adventure has been pleasing tourists and locals alike for more than 25 years now. With the popularity of jet boats, this sport became even more exciting. Parasailers can now fly at great speeds high up in the sky. Whether it be for a thrill-seeking adventure, or family bonding time at the beach, parasailing is a water sport that is sure to quickly win your heart.
