Arkansas is overlooked by many as a hiking destination or a vacation destination; however, “the natural state” is more than just Little Rock and cotton. The beautiful mountains of northwest Arkansas provide hundreds of amazing hiking opportunities. Also, the Ouachita Mountains in the western part of the state provide natural trails with views that rival even those of the Great Smoky Mountains. Furthermore, the Ozark National Forest includes over 395 miles of trails. Overall, Arkansas is a great place to take a hike, and listed below are some of the best trails.

While looking out the window on my recent flight to Tokyo, in the distance I saw towering gray mountains covered in snow rising from the sparkling Pacific Ocean. A quick glance at the flight path function on the television simply said that the area was the Kamchatka Peninsula. When I first started hiking with my husband, he made me very nervous. He would just reach up, pull down a leaf and announce, "you have to try this; it is so sweet," as he gnawed away at the greens. In my family, I learned don’t pick anything in the forest, it could kill you! So this new attitude of the forest is a wide smorgasbord of goodness took some getting used to. The truth is, my husband was right, as there are a lot of great natural snacks out there on the trail just waiting to be enjoyed.
